Course Overview

This course provides an understanding of the various legal and liability issues that security guards may face on the job. The goal is to help security guards understand their rights and responsibilities and the legal boundaries they must operate within to minimize personal and employer liability.

Apply best practices to minimize personal liability while on duty
Understand the basics of criminal, civil, and administrative law as they apply to security work
Recognize situations where law enforcement should be contacted rather than intervening directly
Avoid common legal risks such as negligence, unlawful detainment, or excessive force
Identify and comply with BSIS codes, regulations, and licensing requirements
Apply the BSIS code of conduct, including confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical behavior
Operate within legal boundaries when performing duties, including the proper use of force

Understanding Liability in Security Roles

Techniques to minimize personal liability, such as adhering to protocols, staying within legal boundaries, and following proper procedures. Contractor Liability: Overview of contractor responsibilities and how liability may be shared or divided between contractors and employers. Understanding the importance of the contract’s terms, conditions, and specific liability clauses. Employer Liability: Explanation of employer liability and what happens when a security incident occurs on employer premises. Examples of how an employer may share responsibility and ways guards can help reduce employer liability by following company policies.
